Abstract

The academic performance for students from La Escuelita Elementary School has historically been below the average when compared to other schools in the Chinatown neighborhood, like Lincoln Elementary, and the Oakland District. The School Accountability Report Card presents data that shows both schools being faced with similar demographic challenges such as students in poverty and English as a secondary language. What appears to allow students at Lincoln Elementary to excel in State exams is that its organizational is structured to provide teachers with adequate professional development and training. As shown in the School Accountability Report Card, La Escuelita’s professional developments initiatives are ambiguous. A review of the relevant literature and research will discuss both schools academic progress, as well as define appropriate professional development methods available to La Escuelita. Data will be collected from teachers at both schools, two Oakland School Board Members, and the Oakland Unified School District Deputy Chief of Talent to compare the professional development current being executed at both La Escuelita and Lincoln Elementary School. The results of this study will provide information on whether professional development and training offered to teachers can improve the students’ academic performance.
