Abstract
The Novato Police Department implemented a Succession Plan in February, 2006. This research project reviews the development and value of Succession Plans in business and governmental organizations. Research was conducted into the impact of the Succession Plan on the Novato Police Department and similar agencies. The project recommends the continued use and expansion of the Succession Plan. Additionally, this paper recommends steps to aid the agency and employees in career planning and employee development, as well as recommendations for on-going research.
