Abstract

Canterbury Woods, a Life Care community owned and operated by the not-forprofit Episcopal Homes Foundation, maintains a Medicare certified skilled 1 nursing facility on the community campus. No previous study of the cost of Medicare related nursing care or the costs associated with meeting the requirements for Medicare certification specific to this facility had been conducted prior to this case study. Carried out by retrospective data review of a 21-month period of Medicare A patient records and review of personnel documents from a randomly selected pay period, this study indicates that the cost of care at Canterbury Woods exceeds the cost previously determined by the Foundation by $28.00 per patient per day and that the costs associated with Medicare certification result in a negative Medicare margin of - 49.18%. The administrative team at Canterbury Woods and the Foundation chief operating officer were interviewed to determine the acceptability of either withdrawing from Medicare certification or increasing admission of private paying non-resident patients as a means of improving the financial status of the facility.
